On 20 June 2022, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety, Jean Todt, released a book of essays entitled The Road Ahead, 26 Voices for Safe and Sustainable Mobility. Built around six sections, the book highlights how road safety must be embedded in all other Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on economic growth, environment, health, education, gender equality, and partnerships.
Lotte Brondum, the Alliance’s Executive Director, was among the contributors, who also included Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General, WHO; Michelle Yeoh, actress and UNDP Goodwill Ambassador, Zoleka Mandela, writer and activist; and HSH Princess Charlotte of Monaco, as well as national Transport Ministers, Mayors, senior UN representatives, corporates, and more.
Lotte’s essay, entitled Leaving Noone Behind: Meaningful Participation as a Tool for Inclusion explores how women and other overlooked groups are at more risk on our roads because their voices have not been heard and therefore their needs not addressed. It shows how including people in decision making leads to better, safer roads, taking examples from NGOs’ work around the world.
