ASIRT Honors Shane O’Connor, FedEx’s Road Safety Hero

Shane O’Connor, Communication Advisor, FedEx, is a well-known figure in the road safety world and a great friend and supporter of the Alliance. You may have met him at the Global Meeting, seen him speak at a conference, or benefited from his support and advice. As the face of road safety at FedEx, he is a strong advocate for NGOs and their roles.

This month, Shane was among honorees at the Association for Safe International Road Travel (ASIRT)’s 2017 gala, receiving the ASIRT Global Corporate Conscience Award. The gala is held every year in Washington, DC, US, as a fund-raiser and is attended by government representatives, NGOs, corporations, and ASIRT supporters. This year’s theme was “Building a Road Safe Future.”

Shane received the award for his commitment, passion, and focused advocacy on behalf of road safety. Shane is the face of the corporation’s road safety commitment, an integral part of its corporate identity. His role spans from the detailed, working with NGOs to design and implement effective road safety programs, to the strategic, facilitating FedEx’s support for the UN’s Decade of Action for Road Safety. He has been an integral part of the Alliance Advocate training, planning, advising, and facilitating with colleagues, even opening his home to the Advocates, as well as the wider Alliance Empowerment Program.

In her letter of support to ASIRT, Lotte Brondum, the Alliance’s Executive Director, said, “To award Shane’s deep dedication to road safety and the people he works with is the right thing to do! I cannot think of anyone more deserving than him! I met Shane the first time at a UNRSC meeting, and he agreed to join our Fourth Global Meeting in Marrakesh in 2015. Since this, Shane has been our committed companion on our journey to save lives. He believes in people, ideas, and plans, and he trusts you and takes your hand and stays there right beside you through it all. He is a remarkable person and friend who opens his heart, home, and friendship to us all—and our community is better because he is in it.”

We congratulate Shane on this well-deserved honor.
