Throughout 2024, as NGOs have been preparing for the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety (Ministerial Conference), Alliance activities have helped them to spotlight the realities of people’s daily journeys around the world and the evidence-based solutions to make those realities safe. We have equipped NGOs with tools and initiatives to support them in advocacy and to push for accountability.
Key highlights include:
In early December, the Alliance’s Accountability Toolkit received the Prince Michael International Road Safety Award. This recognition honors the Toolkit’s role in supporting NGOs worldwide by providing them with practical, web-based tools to hold governments accountable for road safety commitments. The Toolkit helps NGOs track progress toward SDG 3.6, to halve road deaths and injuries by 2030.
The award highlights the impact of the Toolkit, which has already been adopted by NGOs across the world to advocate for safer roads. It underscores the crucial role NGOs play in pushing for policy changes that can prevent road deaths and injuries.

In 2024, we expanded the reach of the Accountability Toolkit by launching it in Spanish. This ensured that NGOs across Latin America and other Spanish-speaking regions could access and utilize the Toolkit’s resources in their advocacy efforts.

NGOs in 44 countries did 118 Mobility Snapshots. This initiative aimed to gather real-time data on the conditions of daily journeys around the world. These Snapshots have shone a light on the unsafe conditions that millions of people face on a daily basis, including poorly designed roads, unsafe crossings, and lack of infrastructure for vulnerable road users.
The Snapshots provide a powerful visual representation of the urgent need for action on road safety, and they have already been used to advocate for tangible changes in infrastructure to protect pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.

The First Latin American Regional Meeting of the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety was another significant milestone. This meeting brought together NGOs from across the region to collaborate, share best practices, and strategize on how to address the region’s unique road safety challenges. The meeting served as an important opportunity for NGOs to strengthen their voices in advocacy and to align their efforts with regional and global initiatives aimed at reducing road traffic deaths and injuries.

In 2024, seven NGOs from the Alliance Incubator Program pioneered the Accountability Toolkit. These NGOs are using the Toolkit to push for policy change in areas such as lower speeds and 30 km/h zones, pedestrian facilities, traffic calming, and helmet law with enforcement and promotion. Their work has demonstrated the power of the Accountability Toolkit in tracking government commitments and advocating for solutions that are proven to save lives.
These Incubator NGOs have already made significant progress in influencing policy changes and engaging with governments to hold them accountable for meeting road safety targets. Their work is paving the way for other NGOs to follow suit and use data-driven approaches to drive road safety improvements in their communities.

The Assessment of the Enabling Environment for Road Safety Civil Society Organizations in Three Sub-Saharan African Countries report provides a framework designed to initiate discussions between government and civil society working in road safety to identify and analyze barriers and enablers for both parties to address in collaboration.
The report is designed to initiate discussion between government and NGOs working in road safety. This will help to identify and analyze barriers and enablers for both parties to address in collaboration. It shows that creating an enabling environment must be a two-way regular conversation. This requires candid reflections of possible barriers and enablers in building a meaningful relationship between both parties to continually improve the enabling environment.

In 2024, the Alliance reached a new milestone with a 9% growth in our membership compared to 2023. This increase reflects the commitment and interest of organizations around the world to promote safe mobility for all, and to reduce the fatalities and serious injuries in road crashes.
More members in more countries means a broader and more diverse impact. Each new organization brings unique perspectives, experiences, and approaches; enriching our collective strategies and influence regionally and globally. This growth not only strengthens our voice in evidence-based policy advocacy, but also facilitates the creation of local solutions with global reach.
Stronger organizational governance
The General Assembly 2024 marked an important moment for the Alliance. During the assembly, our members approved several amendments to the statutes, implemented new policies to enhance our operations, and elected two new members to the Board of Directors.
Strengthening our governance not only enhances our leadership capacity but also ensures that the Alliance continues to be a global reference in promoting road safety. With these changes, we are better equipped to work more inclusively and effectively, supporting our NGOs in their mission to save lives on roads worldwide.
None of this work would have been possible without the support of our global partners and sponsors. We extend our deepest gratitude to FIA Foundation, Hasselt University, Michelin, TotalEnergies Foundation, TransSafe and the EU/Swiss Development Agency, and Uber for their continued support, which has enabled us to carry out our initiatives and strengthen our collective advocacy efforts.
Our partnerships have been crucial in amplifying the voices of NGOs and ensuring that road safety remains on the global agenda. Together, we are working to ensure that all road users—especially those most vulnerable—can travel safely.
As we reflect on 2024, we are filled with hope and determination for what lies ahead. The Ministerial Conference in 2025 presents an unprecedented opportunity for governments, NGOs, and other stakeholders to make lasting commitments to road safety. The Alliance is proud of the progress we’ve made this year, but there is still much work to be done.
