As part of the official launch of this year’s European Mobility Week on 16 September 2019, European Commissioner for Transport, Violeta Bulc, will be hosting a European Road Safety Roundtable as part of the series of Round the World Roundtables organized by the Alliance during the lead-up to the 3rd Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety, in Sweden in February 2020. The European edition will involve contributions at EU level, based on the new EU Road Safety Policy Framework 2021-2030, and at the level of European cities. This year’s European Mobility Week, involving activities in towns and cities all across Europe from 16–22 September, focuses on safe cycling and safe walking, with the motto “Walk with us!”.
Last week, as part of the policy framework, the European Commission published details regarding its Strategic Action Plan on Road Safety and how it will be put into practice. The plan includes a first list of key safety performance indicators (KPIs) that will be monitored across the EU to help achieve a 50% reduction in road fatalities and serious injuries by 2030 with a view to zero road deaths and serious injuries by 2050. The KPIs include indicators for vehicle safety, seat belt use, speed compliance and post-crash care and are part of the Europe on the Move package.
